You asked me if you should turn the yellows down. Well, yes, they are a bit overwhelming, but generally yellow is an easy color to use in an anaglyph. I don't know how you merged the images, so I can't tell you what you should do, but I myself am very fond of Stereo Photo Maker (SPM) to make anaglyphs. It offers several ways to finetune colors and contrasts, but you might try starting with the dubois anaglyph type. As for the subject, the painting is REALLY GREAT, but it is also very chaotic, which IMHO makes it less suitable for stereoscopic 3D, because it is very hard to distinguish what all the parts are... , so at that I think you did a marvelous and courageous attempt!

Form the looks of the 3D effect, the only thing that is holding the effect at bay is all the colors. Even without look at it I can see that it must be a very detailed map. I think if your colors were less intense the effect would be much stronger. Have you tried do a 3D B&W one.
BTW... Where is the D-Map for this image, I'd love to have a look at it?
